{"id":4869,"date":"2020-09-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jpsmedical.com.au\/glossary-of-terms\/"},"modified":"2023-09-07T13:38:46","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T03:38:46","slug":"glossary-of-terms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jpsmedical.com.au\/glossary-of-terms\/","title":{"rendered":"Glossary of Terms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-01.cms-ap-v2i.applyflow.com\/jps-medical\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/appointment-book-blur-care-40568-700x467-1.jpg\" alt=\"Glossary of Terms\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To follow are explanations for many of the abbreviations and acronyms that are used in relation to medical professionals in Australia, some of which are specific to IMG\u2019S.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>ABN<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Australian Business Number<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a unique 11 digit identifying number that businesses use when dealing with other businesses. For example, you generally need to put your ABN on your invoices, or other documents relating to sales that you make. If you don\u2019t, other businesses may withhold 46.5% from any payment to you. You also need an ABN in certain dealings with the Tax Office and other areas of government. Registering for an ABN is not compulsory, but you will need one to register for the GST. Your ABN allows you to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facilitate a single Business Activity Statement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confirm your business identity to others when ordering and invoicing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid PAYG tax on payments you receive<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim GST credits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claim energy grants credits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obtain an Australian domain name.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AHOMPS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>After Hours Other Medical Practitioners Program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipn.com.au\/work-with-ipn\/gp-opportunities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DoHA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The AHOMPs program provides access to the higher A1 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rebate to non-vocationally recognised medical practitioners providing after hours general practice services through an accredited general practice or an accredited Medical Deputising Service (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term25\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Normally non-vocationally recognised medical practitioners would access the lower A2 Medicare rebate. Only doctors who are already participating on the AHOMPS can continue to access it from Jan 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019. Doctors who are participating on the program will be able to continue accessing it until 30 June 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AHPRA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As of July 1st 2010, all State Medical Boards are no longer in existence as they have been replaced by one National Board which is the organization responsible for the registration and accreditation of 10 health professions across Australia. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AHPRA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018s operations are governed by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which came into effect on 1 July 2010. This law means that for the first time in Australia, 10 health professions are regulated by nationally consistent legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AMC<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Australian Medical Council<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Australian Medical Council (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an independent national standards body for medical education and training and has four core functions. The AMC:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assesses medical courses and training programs (both medical school courses and the programs for training medical specialists) and accredits programs which meet AMC accreditation standards<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assesses international medical graduates who wish to practise medicine in Australia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advises medical boards on uniform approaches to the registration of medical practitioners and the maintenance of professional standards in the medical profession<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advises the Commonwealth on the recognition of medical specialties<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AMC MCQ<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Australian Medical Council Multiple Choice Questions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The MCQ consists of two x three and a half hour examinations administered in morning and afternoon sessions on the same day. Questions are multiple choice, with one correct answer to be selected from five.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>ANZCO<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the list of occupations on the Critical Skills Shortage List in the Department of Immigration. We use the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ANZCO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Code 253111 \u2013 General Medical Practitioner to sponsor our clinicians on Temporary Resident 457 Visas. ANZSCO is also used within skilled visa programs, where it is a requirement for visa eligibility, as the standard by which a visa applicant\u2019s skills to undertake a specific occupation in Australia are assessed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>AON<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Area of Need<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Areas of Need are determined by the State and Territory Governments and methods of defining them vary \u2013 not to be confused with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterd#term18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DWS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are determined by Department of Health and Ageing. An Area of Need (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AON<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is any position\/location in which there is a lack of specific medical practitioners or where there are medical positions that remain unfilled even after recruitment efforts have taken place over a period of time. Area of Need applies to both public and private sector positions. Most overseas trained doctors (OTDs) are required to work in an Area of Need when they first come to Australia, unless they hold full Australian medical registration or have completed the standard pathway for specialist assessment or for GP\/family physician assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CAT 1<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Category 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. GPs that hold:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellowship of The Royal New Zealand College of GPs (FRNZCGP);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certificates in Family Practice from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and successful completion of both parts of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP UK) and Certificates from Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) UK.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors who hold these qualifications are eligible for admission to Fellowship of the RACGP <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ad eundum gradum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>CAT 2<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Category 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. GPs that hold:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners UK (MRCGP)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership of the Faculty of General Practitioners; or Member of the College of Family Practitioners, South Africa by examination (MFGP or the new MCGP)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Certificate of the American Board of Family Practice USA (ABFP);<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Certificate of the Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP) UK;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) from the National University of Singapore;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Registration as a Family Physician with the Health Professions Council of South Africa ( formerly the South African Medical and Dental Council of South Africa)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masters of Family Medicine, South Africa;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masters of Prax Medicine, South Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors who hold these memberships\/qualifications are required to undertake the RACGP Fellowship exam. They have 2 years in which to successfully complete the exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>DoHA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Department of Health and Ageing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Department of Health and Ageing has a diverse set of responsibilities but they determine <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterd#term18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DWS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provide 19AA and 19AB exemptions and work closely with both <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the state Medical Boards to ensure compliancy with limitations and laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>DWS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>District of Workforce Shortage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A District of Workforce Shortage (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterd#term18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DWS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an area in which the general population\u2019s need for healthcare has not been met. DWSs are determined by the Department of Health and Ageing and are linked to the provision of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider numbers. For the purpose of DWS evaluation, geographic divisions used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics are used. In general, a location is deemed a DWS if it falls below the national average for the provision of medical services. DWS only applies to medical jobs that need to provide services that attract Medicare rebates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>EICS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>International Credentials Service of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the United States (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettere#term20\"><b>EICS<\/b><\/a><b> verification)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In order to be eligible to sit the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term13\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMC MCQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AMC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Clinical Examinations, doctors must have their credentials verified by the International Credentials Service of the Educational Commission. Generally the doctor is only required to provide their EICS number before sitting the exam, and the credentials will be verified before the exam results are released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>ENS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Employee Nominated Scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the visa on which doctors are able to apply for Permanent Residency. See \u201cPermanent Residency\u201d under the visa section in this manual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>FRACGP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In order to become a Vocationally Registered GP in Australia, you are required to have either your <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterf#term21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FRACGP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> qualification or equivalent. The Fellowship exam is a long and involved process and requires a minimum of 4 years of GP experience, one of which at least must be in Australia in order to be eligible to enrol in the exam. The actual exam involves<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Written Component <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AKT (Applied Knowledge Test) 150 questions to be completed in four hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFP (Key Feature Problems) 26 questions to be completed in three hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clinical Component <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This consists of approximately 17 stations, 14 active stations and three rest stations. It takes approximately four hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medical practitioner under the supervision of a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in a job recognised as leading to the award of Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>IELTS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>International English Language Testing System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letteri#term22\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IELTS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the world\u2019s proven English test. Over 1.2 million candidates take the test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. IELTS is recognised by more than 6000 institutions across 120 countries. This is what is used in Australia for IMGs wishing to work, and the results are required as part of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterf#term21\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FRACGP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exams. <\/span><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the IELTS does have an expiry date and doctors are often required to resit their IELTS or to have Statutory Declarations signed by 2 Australian Trained Doctors as affidavits to a doctors\u2019 English ability for the RACGP if their IELTS has expired.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>IMG<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>International Medical Graduate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An International Medical Graduate (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letteri#term23\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is someone who has gained their primary medical qualification outside of Australia or New Zealand and is now a registered and practicing general practitioner in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Locum<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A locum is a medical practitioner who acts as a substitute for another medical practitioner while another practitioner is temporarily absent from their practice. Their periods of cover may vary from one day to a few months or even years. IPN and Gemini have several GPs who are registered as Roving Locums meaning they cover many areas, they are still required to have a provider number for each area they cover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>MDS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Medical Deputising Service<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A medical practitioner, or group of practitioners, who provides after hours primary care, but not continuing care to the patients of the subscribing primary care medical practitioners. An <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term25\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually after hours care, and part of the Practice Incentives Program (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterp#term32\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that a practice provides after hours care for their patients and hence most Gemini and IPN practices are in agreements with MDS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Medicare<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the National Health Insurance Scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>MMM <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modified Monash Model. The Modified Monash Model (MMM) is a recently developed geographical classification system, using up-to-date population data, which the Government can use to better address the maldistribution of medical services across Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Moratorium<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time in which you, as an overseas trained doctor, are required to work in an Area of Need or District of Workforce Shortage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Non VR<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Non Vocationally Registered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettern#term28\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non VR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doctors are those who obtained their Primary Medical Qualification outside of Australia and have not yet completed their RACGP pathway to become a Fellow. Currently the rebate differential stands at $6.60 for a standard consultation. Assuming that the average full time GP sees approx 8000 patients per year the Non VR GP is $52,800 dollars worse off by not being on the VR. Also except in certain circumstances non-VR doctors are not able to access <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterp#term32\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PIP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> payments and other \u201cblended payments\u201d This is the yearly penalty the Government imposes on a Non VR GP. The vocational register has been deliberately designed to be difficult to access. It suites the Government to have a pool of financial disadvantaged doctors whom they can \u201cforce\u201d into the more difficult to fill positions (ie rural and outer suburban areas). The government allows GP\u2019s to access the VR rebate, provided they move towards Government perceived areas of need (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/lettera#term14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AON<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The VR rebate is held as an \u201cincentive\u201d to Non VR GP\u2019s to relocate. The current Rural Other Medical Practitioners Program (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterr#term37\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROMPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) allows a Non VR GP to access the higher rebate provided they move to the country and give an undertaking to sit the exam in 4 years time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>OMPS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Other Medical Practitioners Program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The OMPs programs provide access to the A1 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rebate for non-vocationally recognised doctors who provide services in approved locations and meet other eligibility criteria specific to the particular program. Only doctors who are already participating on any of OMPS programs can continue to access them from Jan 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019. Doctors who are participating on these program will be able to continue accessing them until 30 June 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>OTD<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Overseas Trained Doctor (see <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letteri#term23\"><b>IMG<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This term is not used widely in Australia anymore since OTDs are now referred to as IMGs. They are one and the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>PESCI<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Pre Employment Structured Clinical Interview<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterp#term31\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PESCI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of the assessments of clinical knowledge and skills which an International Medical Graduate (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letteri#term23\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IMG<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) must undergo as part of the nationally consistent assessment process for IMGs. It provides an assessment of an applicant\u2019s clinical knowledge and experience using a set of structured questions and scenarios, in an interview situation. Candidates who are not eligible for general registration via the \u2018Competent Authority\u2019 or Specialist Pathway with the Medical Board will usually progress via the \u2018Standard Pathway\u2019. Queensland Health will require all doctors progressing via the \u2018Standard Pathway\u2019 to be assessed as \u2018suitable\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>PIP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Practice Incentives Program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an initiative generated by The Australian Government and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where accredited practices are paid additional financial incentives for providing quality care to patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Prescriber Number<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allocates prescriber numbers to all GPs so that they are able to prescribe medication. This number is generic and can be used anywhere in the country. However, the right to practise medicine is linked to the state medical registration so, if you are not registered in a particular state even when you have a prescriber number, you cannot write a prescription in that state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Provider Number<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To work as a doctor in Australia, you need to have a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterp#term33\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provider Number<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are different levels of Medicare access under the provider number scheme depending on medical board registration and satisfying the legislative requirements on accessing Medicare rebates. A Medicare provider number does not automatically allow a doctor to attract Medicare rebates for their services, as there are various levels of Medicare access for a provider number. If the position is in an approved District of Workforce Shortage, then you may apply for an exemption to the Medicare provider number restrictions. This is referred to as a \u2018section 19AB exemption\u2019. An application for a section 19AB exemption is made on the same form as your application for a Medicare provider number. A Medicare Provider Number may allow a doctor to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise referrals for specialist services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make requests for pathology or diagnostic imaging services. \u00a0Where the doctor satisfies the legislative requirements (by obtaining a 19AB exemption as above) their provider number may also be used to:<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attract Medicare rebates for professional services rendered (that is, treat private patients). A Medicare provider number uniquely identifies the medical practitioner and the location where they render the service. If a practitioner works in more than one location, they are required to have more than one provider number.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>RA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Remoteness Area (classification)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Remoteness Area classification was developed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics as a statistical geography that allowed quantitative comparisons between \u2018city\u2019 and \u2018country\u2019 Australia. The purpose of the structure is to classify census collection districts (CDs) which share common characteristics of remoteness into broad geographical regions called Remoteness Areas (RAs). The defining difference between \u2018city\u2019 and \u2018country\u2019 is physical remoteness from goods and services. RAs are the spatial units that make up the ASGC Remoteness Classification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>ROMPS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Rural Other Medical Practitioners Program<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterr#term37\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ROMPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program provides access to the A1 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rebate to non-vocationally recognised medical practitioners providing general practice services in eligible rural and remote areas. Normally non-vocationally recognised medical practitioners would access the lower A2 Medicare rebate. To be eligible for this program a doctor must:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be non-vocationally recognised (also known as Other Medical Practitioners \u2013 OMPS) and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agree to express an interest in achieving Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners or Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. A doctor must also be providing services in any of the following designated locations: Rural, Remote Metropolitan Area (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterr#term36\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RRMA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) classifications 4-7 Defined \u2018areas of consideration\u2019 or Approved RRMA 3 locations which have significant medical workforce shortages (as deemed eligible by the Departmental Delegate).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only doctors who are already participating on the ROMPS can continue to access it from Jan 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2019. Doctors who are participating on the program will be able to continue accessing it until 30 June 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>RRMA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Rural, Remote and Metropolitan Areas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Department of Health and Family Services Rural, Remote and Metropolitan Areas Classification, November 1994 has been used to classify the geographic location of the job of responding medical practitioners in the following seven categories. The data used in determining these categories are based on the 1991 population census.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Metropolitan areas:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capital cities consist of the State and Territory capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin and Canberra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other metropolitan centres consist of one or more statistical subdivisions which have an urban centre population of 100,000+ in size. Examples: Newcastle, Wollongong, Townsville.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Rural zones:<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Large rural centres are statistical local areas where most of the population reside in urban centres of population of 25,000 to 99,999. Examples: Dubbo, Orange, Bundaberg, Cairns, Launceston (Tas)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small rural centres are statistical local areas in rural zones containing urban centres of population between 10,000 and 24,999. Examples: Armidale, Bathurst, Coffs Harbour, Caloundra, Gladstone, Geraldton, Mandurah; Burnie\u2013Somerset, Devonport (Tas).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other rural areas are the remaining statistical areas within the rural zone. Examples: Cardwell Shire, Whitsunday Shire (Qld); Barossa (SA); York Shire (WA); George Town, Ross (Tas).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Remote zones:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are generally less densely populated than rural statistical local areas and hundreds of kilometres from a major urban centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Remote centres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are statistical local areas in the remote zone containing urban centres of population of 5,000 or more. These centres are: Bowen, Emerald, Mount Isa, Broome, East Pilbara, Esperance, Kalgoorlie\/Boulder, Port Hedland, Karratha (WA); Alice Springs, Katherine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other remote areas are the remaining areas within the remote zone. Examples: Cobar, Lord Howe Island (NSW); French Island, Orbost, Walpeup (Vic); Longreach, Coober Pedy, Coolgardie, Exmouth, Laverton, Shark Bay (WA); King Island, Strahan (Tas); Daly, Jabiru, Nhulunbuy (NT).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>SIP<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Service Incentive Payments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An Area of Need (AON) is any position\/location in which there is a lack of specific medical practitioners or where there are medical positions that remain unfilled even after recruitment efforts have taken place over a period of time. Area of Need applies to both public and private sector positions. Most overseas trained doctors (OTDs) are required to work in an Area of Need when they first come to Australia, unless they hold full Australian medical registration or have completed the standard pathway for specialist assessment or for GP\/family physician assessment. <\/span><b>NOTE:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unlike the Districts of Workforce Shortage, which are determined by the Department of Health and Ageing, Areas of Need are determined by the State and Territory Governments and methods of defining them vary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>VR<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Vocational Registration (<\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterv#term40\"><b>VR<\/b><\/a><b>)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for general practice was introduced in 1993, in an attempt to improve professional standards and reward high quality practice. It also gives recognition to general practice as a discipline, or even a specialty, in its own right, rather than just a \u2018catch all\u2019 grouping for doctors who are not surgeons, physicians, gynaecologists etc. Being a VR GP gives access to special <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gprecruitment.com.au\/glossary\/2\/letterm#term26\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> item numbers and higher Medicare rebates, which translates into a higher income. GPs with VR are required to fulfil the RACGP Quality Assurance &amp; Continuing Professional Development (QA &amp; CPD) criteria in order to remain vocational registration.
