Instead of using a GP-to-population ratio, the new DPA system takes into account demographics (gender\/age) and socio-economic status of patients living in a GP catchment area.<\/p>\n<p>The DPA applies the following blanket rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inner metropolitan areas are automatically deemed non-DPA;<\/li>\n<li>MM 5 \u2013 7 are automatically deemed DPA;<\/li>\n<li>Northern Territory is automatically deemed DPA;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A map of the Distribution Priority Areas is available at the following website:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/apps-and-tools\/health-workforce-locator\/health-workforce-locator\">https:\/\/www.health.gov.au\/resources\/apps-and-tools\/health-workforce-locator\/health-workforce-locator<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So all International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who specialise in General Practice and are still subject to the 10 year moratorium are now required to work in a DPA instead of a DWS in order to obtain a Medicare Provider Number.<\/p>\n<p>What hasn\u2019t changed are the locum, after-hours, replacement, and spousal provisions which allow GP\u2019s required to work in a DPA location to work in a none DPA location provided they can satisfy the requirements.<\/p>\n<p>For doctors other than GP\u2019s the DWS classification is still in place and affects the following specialties;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anaesthetics<\/li>\n<li>Cardiology<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic Radiology<\/li>\n<li>General Surgery<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpsmedical.com.au\/candidates\/hospital-doctors-jobs\/obstetrics-gynaecology-jobs\/\">Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ophthalmology<\/li>\n<li>Medical Oncology<\/li>\n<li>Psychiatry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DWS Specialist layers can be viewed using the same map available on the website listed above. .<\/p>\n<p>Going forward the Department of Health plan to establish a Distribution Advisory Group (DAG) later in 2019.
